You probably heard of the liberalization of the electricity market, but do you know exactly what benefits will take you or what do you have to do in this situation? Discover in the article all you need to know about the change of the electricity supplier!
Liberalization of the electricity market
Starting from 1 January 2025, the National Energy Regulatory Authority (anare) no longer regulates prices for the supply of electricity to domestic consumers. This means that the Romanian electricity market becomes competitive and several companies will compete to offer you as competitive offers.
However, there is the possibility of concluding an electricity contract with a supplier on the free market and before January 1, 2025, the difference is that now the price of electricity is no longer regulated by a central state authority.
So, if you have not had a contract concluded with a supplier on the free electricity market by 1 January 2025, now you have these options:
- You can change the electricity supplier
- You can still collaborate with the electricity provider with whom you have the current contract
How can you change the electricity supplier?
You can change the electricity supplier for free, you need technical changes. All you have to do is inform yourself and choose the best offer for your needs, but keep in mind that you can receive a discount for the new contract from the current supplier until 30 June 2025.
If you have not received so far, you will receive a form sent by the current electricity supplier in the post box. In this form you will find the offer it has for the free market. If you want to maintain the current electricity supplier, everything you need to do is fill in the form and send it to the supplier, the electricity contract will be automatically extended according to the options you have appeared in this form.
What happens if you don’t change the electricity supplier?
If the electricity supplier does not change until 30 June 2025, you will not be disconnected. And electricity will continue to be provided by the supplier with which you have the current and monthly contract you will be invoiced electricity at the price equal to the price of the universal offer in force, starting from 1 July 2025.
What you need to know is that you can change your electricity provider at any time, even after June 30, 2025. If you want to do it, you have to notify the supplier. So you have the right to make this change in 21 calendar days from the date of the request.
The benefits of liberalization of the electricity market
The liberalization of the electricity market in Romania means that this sector is no longer under control of state institutions. As a result, companies operating in this sector will compete to provide you with the most competitive services and therefore enjoy a wide range of suppliers and competitive prices.
Even if the state authorities no longer regulate the electricity market, the electricity grid remains the same, under the state authority. This means that suppliers will only transmit electricity, without having to make technical changes (you will not have to disconnect or reconnect).
Another advantage that the liberalization of the electricity market has that you can negotiate the terms of the contract with the electricity provider and here we refer to the price, to the duration of the contract, etc.
In conclusion, the liberalization of the electricity market offers you more freedom, as in the case of other liberalized markets, such as life insurance. Now you can choose from many suppliers, you can conclude a contract at more competitive prices, you can change the supplier with another and you can negotiate the terms of the contract.
